Project Overview

Screen Cares analyzes your past phone usage, offering a personalized timeframe to diminish screen time aligned with your preferences and lifestyle. Once the user establish a screen time limit, for every 30 minutes users exceed your daily limit, a small contribution (£1) is automatically earmarked to support a charitable cause within the app (users can change the amount from the settings).

And, for every 5 days the user complete their streak and adhere to your screen time limit, the app rewards them with tangible benefits in the real world, such as exclusive discounts or coupons from partnered businesses.

The Problem

  • Many individuals struggle with excessive smartphone usage, often unaware of the time spent on their devices and its impact on their well-being. Without proper awareness and tools, they find it challenging to manage their screen time effectively, leading to potential negative consequences such as decreased productivity and diminished real-world connections.

The Goal

  • The goal is to empower users to cultivate mindful phone usage. By offering tools to track and manage screen time, users can set personalized goals aligned with their lifestyle and values. Through automatic charitable contributions for exceeded screen time limits and incentives for meeting goals, this app aims to foster a culture of digital mindfulness and positive impact, enriching users' lives while supporting meaningful causes.

Understanding The Users

  • This stage was to determine the primary users and understand their relationship with their phones. I talked to and interviewed 24 different people to gather insights from their experiences and determine my target audience. I conducted interviews, and listened to people's concerns and challenges related to phone usage. Additionally, I requested them to share their screen time and pickup counts, to formulate healthier solutions based on the collective data. As a result, the average screen time per day was 7 hours and 1 minute, and the pickup was 170 times.

As a college student, I find myself constantly distracted by my smartphone, leading to decreased productivity and difficulty focusing on important tasks. I wish there was a solution that could help me make intentional choices about my screen time, and focus on my school tasks better.

As a 26-year-old designer, without a clear understanding of my screen time habits, I often feel overwhelmed and unable to manage my digital usage effectively. Every time, I've kept telling myself that I would limit my phone usage, but without any tangible consequences, I always ended up exceeding my screen time.

Main Findings and Focuses

  • The problem with some of the existing time-limiting apps is that users easily ignore the time limit and continue using their phones without any consequences.

  • The problem with some other screen time-limiting apps is that they block the sites permanently for a day and you cannot access the social media platforms even if you need to use them.

  • Considering common issues with other apps, I aimed to create a solution where users cannot easily ignore the time limits yet still access their social media or other apps as needed.

  • After research findings, feedback, emphasizing with users, and lots of brainstorming, I decided to develop an app grounded in the reward and punishment theory.

  • People tend to keep their promises when there are consequences for their actions. In ScreenCares, this is provided by rewards (rewards) and donations (punishment). Once users establish a screen time limit, for every 30 minutes they exceed their limit, 1 pound is automatically earmarked to support a charitable cause within the app. (The minimum is 1 pound; the amount can be changed from the settings.) Additionally, for every 5 days users conform to their daily time limit, the app awards them with tangible benefits in the real world, such as exclusive discounts or coupons from partnered businesses.

  • At Screen Cares, the power of intentional phone usage not only enhances users' well-being but also contributes to positive change in the world.
